A community volunteer, Lynne Strong-Shinozaki serves as a member of Manhattan Community Board 8 as well as the Weill Cornell Medicine Community Advisory Board. Active within the Manhattan, New York, area, Strong-Shinozaki also belongs to several nonprofit organizations, including the Roosevelt Island Historical Society, where she sits on the board of directors.

The Roosevelt Island Historical Society promotes awareness about the island and its history, and seeks to preserve its landmarks and artifacts. The society also conducts educational tours, offers lectures, and highlights special exhibitions about the area.

On May 10, 2018, the society presented a free event with speaker Jon Crispin, a photographer, at the New York Public Library Branch on Roosevelt Island. Crispin recently completed a multiyear project photographing luggage from the Willard Psychiatric Center. When the center closed in 1995, an employee found a large collection of suitcases in an attic, containing articles belonging to former patients. The photographs highlight the lives and stories of patients at the center between 1910 and 1960.
